This workshop, offered in conjunction with Colorado Autism Education Week, will provide
participants with information about the recent studies from the CDC regarding the prevalence
of autism. Information about methods for diagnosing autism and identifying specific problems
will also be presented. Recent recommendations from the Colorado Autism Commission and
steps for action will be discussed. Presentations will be aimed at a professional audience
including students but content will not include highly technical language. A number of the
topics to be presented have been receiving considerable attention in all forms of media.
Objectives:
Participants will gain knowledge of:
1. The CDC Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network methodology and
findings;
2. The similarities and differences between medical diagnosis and educational identification of
Autism Spectrum Disorders;
3. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations regarding screening for Autism
Spectrum Disorders in primary care and the status of screening in Colorado;
4. The LENA (Language ENvironment Analysis) system and potential as a screening tool for
ASD;
5. Use of a Teacher Nomination strategy to identify students with social and communication
intervention needs;
6. Results of a population based survey for presence of autism in children with Down
syndrome.
